Three different jobs in a Desktop practice
Keep document access, research, and preparation distinct so the evaluation addresses the work that is slowing the office.
| Tool or workflow | Documented job | Staff decision |
|---|---|---|
| TaxesToGo with Desktop Premium | Received document images viewed in the return or Paper Cut | Whether the packet is complete and which data is current |
| Desktop PrepCheck | Research assistant launched from the toolbar | Verify the cited answer against the client's facts |
| TaxAutomate for Desktop | Collection, reviewed binder, and configured preparation handoff | Approve source work and verify the Desktop return |

Follow the uploaded document to the Desktop preparer
A remote document upload can remove the need for a second office visit while leaving preparation work for the staff. TaxSlayer's TaxesToGo help article says document images do not automatically populate return data. Its Desktop instructions describe access in a Premium return or Paper Cut. This statement concerns uploaded images, not every category of information a client may supply.
Ask the staff member who receives the upload to show how the preparer knows it arrived, which client it belongs to, and whether all necessary pages are present. A file count should not stand in for a completeness decision when the taxpayer may still owe the office another statement or answer.
Use PrepCheck for the question it is designed to answer
TaxSlayer documents Desktop PrepCheck as a research chatbot launched from the toolbar into a browser tab. It supplies references and instructs users to verify the response. Include the year, form, and state when evaluating an answer so the preparer can judge it against a defined question.
Keep that research task separate from preparing source values for a return. One demonstration can show whether the research response is useful; another should follow an actual document through correction, approval, and the Desktop handoff. A practice may need both without treating them as interchangeable products.
Connect collection to a reviewed preparation packet
TaxAutomate's available Desktop integration connects client requests, documents, binder review, and approved preparation work to the firm's configured TaxSlayer Pro Desktop workflow. Setup establishes the supported delivery method for that installation. A demonstration should use the edition and tax year your preparer actually works in.
Start with a packet missing one page and assign the request to an intake employee. After the response arrives, ask a different preparer to review the binder and identify what changed. Follow the approved work into the Desktop process and keep any unresolved questions attached to the same engagement.
Evaluate the workstation handoff on a busy day
Desktop evaluation should include the transition from intake staff to the person working at the preparer's station. Record who marks the packet ready, who can resolve a source conflict, and who receives an exception. Avoid a test that assumes the same person performs every step without interruption.
Keep the Desktop and ProWeb evaluations separate. A working cloud demonstration does not establish the setup for an installed Desktop workflow. At completion, the preparer should verify the return data, handle diagnostic and tax questions, and retain final filing control.

- Check a missing page and a replacement upload.
- Retain the research reference with the question it addresses.
