Inventory the complete K-1 packet

Capture the main form, statements, state schedules, footnotes, ownership information, and any K-2/K-3 materials in scope. Page counts and issuer names help detect incomplete uploads.

Intuit's Lacerte page describes document import and automated K-1 delivery among its capabilities. Confirm the direction, supported formats, and edition-specific behavior before designing a transfer around it.

Do not confuse extraction with tax treatment

Amounts may be machine-readable while basis, passive activity, at-risk limitations, state sourcing, and supplemental disclosures still require professional analysis. Link each conclusion to the relevant statement and workpaper.

When the issuer's EIN, entity name, ownership percentage, or state information differs from the prior year, route the variance for review rather than silently overwriting it.

Manage late and corrected forms

Use statuses for expected, received, corrected, superseded, and final. A return should show whether it is blocked by a missing K-1, proceeding under an extension plan, or ready for review.

When a corrected K-1 arrives, identify every downstream return, estimate, or planning deliverable affected and retain the superseded document for the audit trail.

Reviewer checklist

Confirm entity identity, tax year, taxpayer ownership, completeness, state attachments, separately stated items, footnotes, basis workpapers, carryovers, and consistency with the return. Resolve all cross-references before sign-off.

For tax-law conclusions, rely on current authoritative guidance and the firm's qualified reviewer, not on vendor marketing or an AI summary.
