Define complexity for your firm

Complexity may come from entities, states, international items, basis, transactions, ownership changes, elections, or uncertain facts. Create routing criteria so specialist review is assigned before the deadline queue becomes urgent.

Intuit currently presents Lacerte as professional software for complex tax work and describes diagnostics, forms, data import, document management, and planning capabilities. Verify the licensed configuration and add-ons used by the firm.

Review the evidence chain

A reviewer should see the source, workpaper conclusion, software input, diagnostic state, and preparer note for material items. Automation can propose classifications or values, but it should not erase the workpaper reasoning.

For K-1s, brokerage statements, fixed assets, and multi-state items, confirm completeness across pages and supplemental statements before evaluating the calculated return.

Use diagnostics intentionally

Classify diagnostics as blocking, informational, expected override, or requires follow-up. Record the reason for cleared overrides and prevent recurring warnings from becoming background noise.

Add firm-specific checks for risks that product diagnostics cannot know, including missing expected documents, inconsistent client statements, engagement limitations, and unresolved due diligence.

Close review with a defensible record

Final approval should identify who prepared and reviewed the return, what material issues were resolved, and where client authorization is stored. Keep open planning opportunities separate from filing blockers.

After the season, analyze correction themes to improve organizers, training, and routing without implying that fewer notes automatically mean better review.
