Lacerte options and the questions that distinguish them

These are different products with overlapping jobs. Their public descriptions establish a starting point for evaluation, not identical form coverage.

Begin with the document-heavy return

A useful Lacerte evaluation follows a client file with related statements, several issuers, and information already in the return. Extracting a clean W-2 is only one part of that work. The more revealing question is whether the reviewer can find the controlling document, understand a correction, and see what still needs attention.

Intuit says scanned Lacerte Tax Import is sold separately and applies to its Individual 1040 module. Its instructions also identify a practical access issue for SmartVault documents: use a local copy or the configured drive. Include the firm's real document location in the demonstration instead of assuming every file is already on the preparer's computer.

Test updates to an existing Lacerte form

Juno describes choices to add a form, skip a document, or map it to an existing form. It also says Lacerte export is configured during customer onboarding rather than included in the free trial. Ask for a demonstration of the export and your returning-client scenario before treating a successful extraction trial as proof of the entire delivery workflow.

For every option, use a replacement statement and keep the original in the test packet. Ask the reviewer to explain which one controls, where the earlier value went, and what remains to be checked. A visible decision history matters when another preparer resumes the return later.

Compare the preparation services on their own terms

GruntWorx, Filed, and Soraban each name Lacerte in their public preparation or delivery materials. TaxGPT's Cowork FAQ also names Lacerte. Those statements justify a closer evaluation; they do not show that every vendor uses the same connection or covers the same source documents.

Ask each provider for its exact service, validation responsibility, and installation requirements. Do not score an optional human-review service as if it were the same purchase as firm-led review. For a hosted installation, include the person responsible for that environment so the demonstrated configuration matches the one your team can operate.

Include the client work before the binder

TaxAutomate connects document collection and follow-up with source-linked binder review and an approved Lacerte preparation handoff. The available integration is configured for the firm's installation. Include delivery setup and the final Lacerte check in the demonstration so your preparer can follow the entire process.

Use an unresolved client question to test the surrounding workflow. Observe who sends the request, where the response is retained, and how the reviewer sees its effect on prepared work. Compare that process against the systems your firm already uses, then choose the combination that addresses the actual bottleneck.

  • Separate Individual-module import from business-return preparation requirements.
  • Inspect the full statement packet and existing form before approving a change.
  • Demonstrate delivery in your actual Lacerte installation.
  • Leave diagnostic clearance, tax judgment, and final filing control with the preparer.
