Compare the client facts

Review name, address, filing status, dependents, residency, occupations, entities, ownership, and significant life events. Treat the prior return as a prompt for confirmation rather than a source of current-year truth.

Record who confirmed changed facts and where the supporting information is stored.

Compare the evidence inventory

Identify recurring issuers, forms, schedules, carryovers, states, estimated payments, and fixed assets. Mark missing expected items and new items for follow-up.

Check corrected and supplemental forms carefully. A document with the same issuer can still represent a different account, entity, or reporting period.

Compare calculations and positions

Review material changes in income, deductions, credits, withholding, payments, taxable income, carryovers, and state allocation. Classify the cause as factual change, one-time item, law or form change, software behavior, data-entry issue, or unresolved question.

Use firm-defined risk and materiality rules. A small amount may still matter when it affects eligibility, basis, or a future carryforward.

Close and retain the comparison

A named preparer or reviewer clears each material variance with evidence or a documented explanation. Feed legitimate recurring expectations into next year's intake without pre-answering the organizer.

Retain the comparison according to the firm's record policy and any applicable professional requirements.
