Drake’s official 2026 pricing spans unlimited, tiered, pay-per-return, 1040-focused, and online options. Package price is only the first layer: model the number and type of returns, user and office licensing, optional services, and the staff cost of document handling and data entry.
The official 2026 price anchors
As of August 15, 2026, Drake’s public pricing page lists Drake Tax Pro Unlimited multi-user at $3,145 for tax year 2026 and Drake Tax Pro 250 multi-user at $2,375. The page also shows single-user variants, including $2,695 in the Pro product selector. Because Drake’s page is interactive, confirm which combination of return tier and users each displayed amount represents before checkout.
For lower or less predictable volume, Drake lists Pay-Per-Return at $379.99 with 10 individual returns included, then $49.99 for each additional individual return and $74.99 for each business return. Drake Tax Online is listed at $299.99 for the first user, $99 per additional user, $49.99 per individual return, and $74.99 per business return, with stated bulk discounts.
Do not compare plans using return count alone
A 250-return firm may prepare 240 relatively simple 1040s, or a mixed book of individuals, partnerships, S corporations, trusts, and nonprofit returns. The labor, review, realization, and client-communication profile is different even when the count is identical. Model individual and business volumes separately, then test the package against realistic extensions and late returns.
User licensing and physical locations also matter. Drake says desktop licensing is organized by physical site and EFIN, with single-user and multi-user versions. Multi-location firms should confirm the actual license requirement and any available discount directly with Drake.
- Expected individual and business return volume
- Full-time, seasonal, and reviewer user counts
- Number of offices and EFINs
- Remote or browser-based preparation needs
- Portal, workflow, e-signature, payment, bank-product, and support requirements
Include the operating cost of manual preparation
Software licensing is visible; staff friction is not. A buying model should include time spent renaming and splitting files, identifying document types, chasing expected forms, transcribing source values, reconciling prior-year differences, and correcting preventable keying errors. Those costs can exceed the difference between two tax-software packages.
This is where an AI preparation layer changes the analysis. It does not make Drake cheaper. It can reduce the labor required to move a client’s evidence into a reviewable Drake return. The right ROI model uses the firm’s own observed handling time, wage and overhead rates, document mix, exception rate, and verified automation coverage—not a universal speed claim.
A defensible package-selection process
First, export last season’s actual return mix and identify peak concurrent users. Second, calculate the license and per-return cost for each plausible Drake package. Third, add optional products and multi-office needs. Fourth, time a representative sample from client upload to a return ready for professional review. Finally, test the workflow with and without automation on the same source-document types.
The result should be a total operating cost per completed, reviewed return—not just a license divided by return count. Revisit the model after extensions because outlier and business returns often reveal costs that a January buying estimate misses.
